Commonality

The following work was done for Commonality, a competitive dance team based in San Jose, Ca. Since 2019, I had been trusted to help create
various graphic designs to help the growing team with social and marketing material. These include posters, logo designs, tshirt designs and more. Instagram

2023-2024 Design Deck
Project: Redesigning the visual system for the upcoming season
Use: Social media platforms, mainly Instagram
Medium: Digital art using Adobe Photoshop
Inspiration taken from: Pinterest
Photos: Taken by various individuals and owned
by members of Commonality

*Note: Some information on posters are placeholder which may not be accurate.
If you need official information regarding the team, please check their Instagram.

Description below: (left) New season
announcement poster,
(right) Auditions poster, (bottom) auditions FAQ posters

Key words: Warm, Family, Friends, Expressive, Playful, Simple
Colors:  Black, Yellow/Gold, White, Deep navy blue, Mossy green, Teal

Birthday Posts (above)
Unique templatized designs as birthday posters for each member.
Aesthetic: Collage, Cut outs, Vintage photos, Scrapbooking, School
Inspiration and reference gathered via Pinterest

Team Roster
Above: (top) images of team members as the cover poster,
(bottom) names and titles as the following image
Use: To announce new and returning members following  auditions on Instagram
Aesthetic: School yearbook, Vintage
Past posters focused on creating a neatly designed list of team members in alphabetical order, while also indicating members of artistic board. This year’s poster embraces the key words “playful” and “friends” using expressive photos of each member to showcase the collective personality of CM - goofy and fun!

Workshop Posts
Above: (left) general monthly roster, (middle) pop-up, (right) weekly/bi-weekly slots
Use: To share monthly, weekly or pop-up workshops taught by members of Commonality.
Commonality members are not just spending 6+ hours a week practicing with the team, but are often seen teaching at various studios in the Bay Area. These posters are meant to highlight them and spread the word~

Finalized Monthly Workshop Posts
Use: To share monthly, weekly or pop-up workshops taught by members of Commonality.
We came to the conclusion that individual posts might be too time consuming and difficult to keep up with, in addition to the original design being too organic to function as a useful template. We shifted to doing a monthly schedule instead, that laid information out like a calendar!

Fundraiser Posters
Above: Mock posters for various fundraiser events including collaborations with restaurants and boba shops, as well as dance workshops
Fundraiser designs need to include where the event will be held and what participants would receive. This is presented cleanly and clearly with two simple rectangle frames to hold text and imagery. The challenge here is to bring brands from outside of CM into our design language and feel, but also distinguish it from the rest of our poster system so that at first glance, people can tell right away where to go if they are looking for fundraiser information.

Family & Friends Night Poster
Above: Stylistically a little different from the rest of the set, as this poster was a private invitation to show case what the team had been working on for the fall season.

I took it as an opportunity to explore a different approach I saw through my collection of design references, and was a neat opporunity to try something new!

Instagram Highlight Photos
Description above: (top row) highlight photos
that spell out key words associated to the team,
(bottom) mock layout of how the images would
appear on the profile page.
Designs needed to have the versatility to be used for any type of highlight, and would need to make sense if it were visually rearranged (with the way Instagram is programmed). Since these sit at the top of the page and are some of the first things visitors see, it should contain key words or visuals that directly correllate to the team in a simple way. The fallen/stacked letter concept is a fun way to play with the provided space and present a playful carefree energy. The use of black and yellow help tie in with the rest of the feed.

Logo Re-design
Description: (top) logo
animation exploration,
(three bottom rows) logo explorations
After 5 good years of using the logo we had started with, it was time for a refresh. The main goals we wanted to achieve was a modern and timeless logo that could be used across any material or merchandise. It should be bold and easily recognized from far away. The essence of our original logo would stay the same. Simple and clean, with our name, Commonality, shortened to “CM”. Below are mock ups of how the various selects would look embroidered on a black hoodie along with an ideation for our slogan “ooh you cm” and potential sticker options that have the capacity to be more artistic and expressive.
